Togo is a country located in West Africa. Togo is bordered on the West by Ghana, on the East by Benin, to the North by Burkino Faso and to the South by the Bight of Benin (Atlantic Ocean). We have found that God is using Togo to bring us closer to establishing churcches within unreached people groups in and around Togo. We feel that God is using Togo to be a leader in reaching out to the diasopra of the African desendants because the establishment of slavery that began in Togo, Togo is being used by God as a place of healing and reconcilliation.
God started pointing us in the direction of Togo in 1998. We were not sure why because our focus was on Nigeria and Kenya at the time and we were stretched to meet the needs there. God began to show us how Togo is a be gateway to the countries that have been politically and religiously closed off to that part of the world. He placed on us a vision to see thousands of indigenous missionaries being trained through the national church and sent out through out West Africa. He began to put into our path key people from Togo. We began a partnership with CAPRO (Calvary Minisrties) and with the Pastor Galley of Eglise des Assemblées Chrétiennes Viens et Vois. It is through these relationships that we have partnered with fifteen local pastors and churches to train and send out missionaries.
Our programs are generated by the indigenous Church. We attempt to assist them to fulfill the vision that God has placed on their hearts as we merge our hearts together.
Togo Programs:
Adopt-A-Missionary
The responsibility of the Church in Togo would be to identify and target an unreached peoples' group (primarily in northern Togo, Ghana, Benin, Burkino Faso and Nigeria) and to send out a missionary from their own congregation. They would provide spiritual oversight and comfort for the missionary and be willing to host a short-term team from the States and assist with the logistics for such a trip. They would contribute 50 percent of the monthly support for their missionary and the American Church will provide the other half of the support.
The Church groups in Togo, that we are working with, wasted no time in fulfilling their end of the deal. They started by selecting a group of 40 missionaries and families who responded and training them and sending them without the support of the American Church. (We still have not been able to find sponsors from the U.S. side.) They sent out this group of 40 with what they had!! The cause of taking the gospel to people who had never heard it became a "fire shut up in their bones."
Now I want you to consider a minute what this kind of sacrifice means for an indigenous missionary. The average missionary/pastor needs about $200 a month. Even at best, this provides only a subsistence level of living and support for the ministry. Consider that these courageous brethren have been willing to accept less then half of their normal needs, pack up their wives and children and take dangerous journeys over treacherous terrain. At times they must travel by lorry, riding outside, on top of huge transport trucks. At other times they must walk or bicycle for many miles. They have done all this with love and joy and gratitude for the privilege of taking the Name of Jesus where He has not been named before. But friends, as Americans and as Christians, their example ought to stir us up to good works. Our faith is absolutely without meaning if it does not conceive and give birth to faithfulness to the cause of Christ.
The first group of 100 missionaries are in need of sponsors and training. To sponsor a missionary student costs $150.00 a year for tutition and about $75.00 a month for support. Then about $200 a month for support after graduation.
The trainig center is in need of repairs any amount contributed will greatly enhance the program. We are in need of construction materials, books, paper, computers, desks, beds, etc. Your funding will help to purchase these much needed supplies and materials. Won't you prayerfully consider this?
I know how many resources we waste as Americans. For most churches or even a cell group, pledging $75/month does not represent sacrifice. It just takes making a choice to be faithful. We urge you to take a plunge into the depths of God's faithfulness as you sow this seed. Their next group of missionaries is ready to begin training and preparing to be sent out.
